#8x8 Fourfold is composed of eight fluorescent tubes that can create four sequences thanks to two switches. In the first sequence, only the tubes numbered 2 3 6 7 are lit, and in the second, only the tubes numbered 1 4 5 8. In the third sequence, all the tubes are lit, and in the fourth, all are switched off. Invited to directly experiment these various light patterns, viewers become actors of their own perception.

Together with James Turrell and Doug Wheeler, Robert Irwin is one of the members of the Light and Space minimalist movement. However, their practice and reflection differ. Robert Irwin's approach is rooted in the tradition of painting, in particular Abstract Expressionism and its singular use of light.

Robert Irwin's #8x8 Fourfold was first shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Illusion of Light at Palazzo Grassi, in 2014.
