Doug
Wheeler

American, born in 1939

Together with James Turrell and Robert Irwin, Doug Wheeler is part of the Light and Space movement. Between 1960 and 1970, this group of Los Angeles-based artists use light as their main working material, exploring its effects and their influence on perception.

The artist creates immersive spaces where light blurs spatial boundaries and disturbs the viewer's senses. The way we analyze time and distance is altered, as is the relationship between our body and our environment. Either natural or artificial, light can be projected on reflective, translucent or transparent materials. Doug Wheeler's installations then produce situations that stimulate the viewer's conscience and senses.

Doug Wheeler's work was shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Illusion of Light at Palazzo Grassi, in 2014. The artwork D-N SF 12 PG VI (2012), specifically created for this space, occupied the whole atrium.
