Latifa
Echakhch

Moroccan & French, born in 1974

Latifa Echakhch works on the immaterial and on memories that elude History. Based on her experiences and memories, which are real and lived, she selects daily life materials to create poetic installations. She uses various sorts of objects, such as bowler hats, carbon paper, jasmine necklaces and the powder traces of red bricks, and stimulates all the senses, sometimes drawing viewers' attention with smells or sounds.

Latifa Echakhch's work is inspired by rebellions, conflicts, social revolts and revolutions. Touched by the ‘suspended moments’ that can happen in chaotic times, she documented the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over a period of one year. Between 2010 and 2012, she followed the Arab Spring as well as demonstrations in Paris. Social unrest may be the issue that drives her to invade the gallery space with her ductile works covered in blue ink that soaks fabrics and drips on the ground.

Latifa Echakhch's work was shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Illusion of Light at Palazzo Grassi, in 2014.
