As they enter the exhibition room, viewers see several curtains behind which are placed all sorts of documents from different times and places: personal photographs of the artist's, instructions on how to hang a convict from a Delaware prison, the last letter the missionary Théophane Vénard sent to his father before his execution.
The installation Autoerotic Asphyxiation is emblematic of the issues Danh Vo tackles in his work: it reprises and stages archives whose powerful memorial and political dimensions highlight the artist's interest in the circulation of cultural values, in particular at the time of Christian missions and colonization. When walking through this spatial composition, the viewers themselves become researchers.
Autoerotic Asphyxiation was first shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Illusion of Light at Palazzo Grassi, in 2014.
