A cheerful everyday scene takes place in a dystopian setting. Two children in school outfits are with a woman in a colourful dress and a see-through helmet holding a mushroom. Plunged in darkness, they seem to be surrounded by machines evoking an underwater or nuclear world.

The gap between their behaviour—they are happily chatting in their living room—and the dark landscape around them is typical of Jia Aili's works. The Chinese artist projects the figures into an apocalyptic future that does not seem to bother them. He brings to light our unawareness and inaction in the face of what might be our future.

Jia Aili’s work in the Pinault Collection was presented during the exhibition “Jia Aili” at the Palazzo Grassi Teatrino from 5 May to 31 July 2015.
