Untitled
2015
Gold, cardboard, various iron and wood farm tools, paint
Variable dimensions
Open, golden industrial cardboard boxes hanging from the ceiling feature brand logos on one side and the American flag on the other. These 27 fragments represent different states that gradually joined the Union. Pitchforks, horseshoes and other metal tools evoke the building of pioneer cities by Europeans. Danh Vo's installation Untitled subtly explores the history of the United States as a colonised and then colonising country.
He uses ordinary objects to question universal identity issues and the contradictions of Western societies. They have strong historical and political connotations and speak for themselves. The artist often brings them together to articulate a critical and subversive discourse. Untitled shows the paradoxical story of American colonisation.
Danh Vo's Untitled was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection in 2015 at the "Slip of the Tongue" exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
