Vincent Gicquel develops a mythology and a unique language in his paintings. Ageless human figures bustle about with pointless tasks in a world without bearings.
What are these pantomime characters doing? Or rather, what were they doing before they were caught going about their business? The question remains unanswered. So does the question of the meaning of life and, consequently, of painting itself. Imperceptible micro-tasks are the only reason for the existence of the characters who perform them. By choosing bright colours, the artist speaks not only of our final destination, but also of the joy of reaching it.
Gicquel's works also raise the question of what painting, art and the pantheon of unsurpassable masters mean today. In this regard, they also, in their own way, attest to the survival of painting. Five works by Gicquel joined the Pinault Collection in 2018. They were exhibited for the first time at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes.
