Ablution

2018

Oil on canvas

190 × 146 cm (74 13/16 × 57 1/2 in.)

The figures in Gicquel's painting Ablution look as if they have been caught by surprise: their mouths are agape and their eyes wide open in astonishment. Taken aback, the two silhouettes differ from each other in their poses and the colours that both fill them up and slip off them like a driving rain. The work questions human beings’ ability to bear life’s worst hardships, but also their ability to overcome and confront them.

Part of the Pinault Collection since 2018, the Ablution was presented at the Couvent des Jacobins for the first time during the exhibition "Debout !" ("Stand Up!") in a room set aside for the artist.
