Halilaj

Japanese, born in 1986

Petrit Halilaj's multifaceted creativity is fuelled by a founding experience: fleeing war-torn Kosovo with his family. He constantly draws on the subjects of conflict and exile in order to make critical, poetic but never nostalgic works.

The sensitive, delicate world he creates immerses viewers into his country’s difficult history. To do that, he uses various objects closely linked to his homeland and his childhood memories, such as his mother's missing jewellery, house rubble or musical instruments. Attesting to an intimate process and his personal history, these items become the setting for a collective narrative. The concepts of the family nucleus, the nation and cultural identity become entangled with the lyrical fragments of his creation.

Halilaj's work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2015 exhibition "Slip of the Tongue" at the Punta della Dogana.
