Two Boys

2010

Fiberglass

279 x 452 x 27 cm (109 13/16 x 177 15/16 x 10 5/8 in.)

A large-scale fibreglass relief shows two boys, clearly brothers. In a startling white, this sculpture softens the features of the two faces, giving them an unreal aura.

With Two Boys (2010), which is part of a series of bas-reliefs, Charles Ray investigates the distortion produced by the motif according to the position of the viewer. When you approach the work from the side, the faces fade, giving way to a landscape. This new energy can be compared to the energy of the two children, and the relief resembles the metaphorical landscape of childhood itself.

The artist’s work in the Pinault Collection was first presented at the Palazzo Grassi at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition (2011-2012).
