Justin
Matherly

American, born in 1972

As an archeologist of modern times, Justin Matherly reinterprets the art of past civilizations by associating it with contemporary materials. Mainly through sculpture and engravings, the British artist is developing a singular oeuvre in which he proposes a true dialogue between materials, motifs and temporalities.

Justin Matherly's work plays on anachronism. He finds inspiration in history, which he finds fascinating. His research and readings (he considers his art to be “the physical transformation of his readings” ) result in Antiquity-like forms which he imbues with contemporary modernity by using materials such as poured concrete and medical devices. His work as an engraver is equally singular: deployed on several levels, his monotypes bring together various temporalities and possible interpretations.

Justin Matherly's work was first presented by the Pinault Collection in 2013 at the exhibition À Triple Tour (“triple locked”) at the Paris Conciergerie.
