Untitled

1990

Oil and enamel on canvas

111.7 x 76.2 cm

The painting’s nebulous grey surface with its broad brushstrokes and discrete intermittences reveals flat, smudged areas and space left in reserve for a bright red background. The simple superposition of coloured layers seeking to cancel each other out generates an intense visual and haptic experience .

Untitled demonstrates Rudolf Stingel’s deep reflexivity with regard to his own work and the pictorial medium in general. In parallel with a whole hyperrealist figurative corpus, he also explores the laws of abstraction in painting and seeks, as he does here, to reject the classic dichotomy between content and form, in favour of pure materiality and a renewed sensitive proposition.

Untitled was first exhibited by the Pinault Collection at the "Rudolf Stingel" show, which was held in 2013 at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
