Untitled

2008

Oil and enamel on canvas

330.2 x 487.7 cm (130 x 192 in.)

Rudolf Stingel's triptych Untitled realistically reproduces the pattern and shininess of a metal fence. Despite its frontality and smoothness, the painting’s silvery strokes suggest a striking depth.

Belonging to a series of identical canvases, this hypnotic work attests to the artist's quest to surpass two-dimensionality in painting and reverse the usual spatial relationships between work and viewer.

Stingel's Untitled was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the 2009 show "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana.
