Untitled

2008

Plaster, aluminium, steel, 18 pannels

98 x 109 x 17 cm (38 9/16 x 42 15/16 x 6 11/16 in.) (each)

A huge floral carpet in relief with complex rococo combinations spreads out across 18 immaculate white plaster panels mounted together as a single piece.

Rudolf Stingel's monumental installation Untitled seems to result from a reflection on abstraction and figuration, motif and texture. As often in his work, the profusion of details repeated in the same configuration both immerses and confuses the viewer's gaze. It also raises issues about the infinite technical reproducibility of an old motif, or even a skill, the plaster here reproducing the delicacy of porcelain.

The work was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2009 "Mapping the Studio" exhibition at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
