Untitled

1990

Oil and enamel on linen.

127 x 147.3 cm (50 x 58 in.)

Two overlapping rows of similarly-sized linen strips, stapled together on a rigid support, break the seemingly monotonous unity of the paint covering them. In natural light, the canvas’s silvery surface seems to change unexpectedly, endlessly transforming shadows and textures.

Rudolf Stingel’s work is an eminently reflective comment on the nature of painting. His constantly perfected, extremely precise processes and approaches to his work are like answers to his visual and existential questions. In this example, he goes so far as to deconstruct the canvas, removing it from the frame and returning it to the simplest two-dimensionality.

Untitled was presented for the first time at the 2019 "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") show at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
