Zoe Crosher, born in Santa Rosa, California, in 1975, lives and works in Los Angeles. Her central body of work is based on a large collection of photographs she acquired: the photographic archive of Michelle duBois. This name “was just one of her five aliases,” and the artist shares very little information about her: she “turned tricks to sustain her travels throughout the Pacific Rim during the 1970s and 1980s. She worked the noon to 10 p.m. shift. She took on many guises and kept fanatical photographic documentation of her dramatic transformations. Until one day she didn’t.” The mystery thus maintained around Michelle duBois—whose archive Crosher explores and mines like a mine—helps to blur the line between fiction and reality even further. The mystery is further heightened by the evolution of the work over the course of its exhibitions: after presenting The Reconsidered Archive of Michelle duBois and The Unraveling of Michelle duBois, Crosher presented a third iteration in 2010, The Unveiling of Michelle duBois. Since then, there have been many others, each “a site-specific and expanded version of the last:” this is how, step by step, Zoe Crosher unravels the intertwined enigma of Michelle duBois and her own practice.
