Michelle DuBois is the pseudonym of an escort girl who, in the 1960s and 1980s, played with her image endlessly through portraits and self-portraits staged for her clients. Californian photographer Zoe Crosher inherited her photographs, which collectively form a showcase of stereotypes of femininity moulded for the male gaze, while simultaneously chronicling a history of amateur photography. Crosher appropriated these images for a number of years, manipulating them until her own face merged with that of the "genuine" Michelle DuBois. In this way she pays tribute to the elusive character of this woman while blurring the boundaries between the original and the reconstruction. Who really is Michelle DuBois? Did she even exist?
