Goldberg

Rochelle Goldberg was born in Vancouver in 1984 and lives and works in New York. In 2015, she described her work as follows: “I had a fantasy, or a false memory, of a snake devouring a crocodile and vice-versa. This triggered a necessary point of departure for my work… I could describe it as a set of metonymical relations, where prey becomes predator, so that the part which is bitten off, the consumed agent, returns to bite back. It is a fierce fertility that wraps around itself in perpetual cycle upon itself in perpetual cycle: everything flows and unfolds constantly, only to start all over again.” This work is permeated by a concept that Goldberg elsewhere calls “intraction,” a term the artist uses to synthetically describe a set of relationships involving the erasure of the boundary between one entity and another. Goldberg, interested in the relationship between the dominant and the dominated and that between humanity and its animality, uses the materiality of her sculptures, particularly the combination of metal and ceramics, to signify this indistinctness.
