Graceland 4
2007
Oil on canvas
55 x 70 cm
A bare tree with long, sketched branches stands out in a quiet, dreary winter landscape. Two horses standing out in the distance like ghostly silhouettes are all that break the desolation.
Graceland 4 belongs to a series of paintings in which Wilhelm Sasnal tends to cross the line between figurative and abstract art. The linear three-part composition stressing the painting’s flatness, the stylised tree motif in the foreground and the alternation between smooth flat colours and thick brushstrokes put the work in line with the visual experiments of Tachism and Abstract Expressionism.
Graceland 4 was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the "Mapping the Studio" show at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
