Senza titolo
Mixed media, 9 pieces
Variable dimensions
The series of nine Senza titolo paintings features a gloomy map of the nine countries accused by George W. Bush and other leaders of protecting terrorists and/or concealing weapons of mass destruction. The "maps" use an innovative chiaroscuro painting and drawing technique: the countries appear on layers of vellum and semi-transparent sheets through a combination of pen, ink, charcoal, pastel, marker, spray paint and varnish.
By extrapolating the "dangerous" vision of these countries through the interplay between opaque and transparent materials, Cuoghi takes the objective science of map-making and turns it into a manipulated, subjective creation. Here, he further complicates the process of superimposition he has already used to make portraits and still lifes.
A work with a strong visual impact, Roberto Cuoghi's Senza titolo series of paintings is in the Pinault Collection. It was first exhibited as part of the "Sequence 1" show at the Palazzo Grassi.
