A Cry From the Inside
1969
Pigment on gold paper
103.5 x 74.9 cm
An anthropomorphic form printed on gold paper, A Cry From The Inside is a work of contrasts. Despite its shimmering appearance, its title, which evokes tortured feelings, reveals the profound ambivalence of its intention. As if suddenly emerging from a golden and ideal exterior, the "cry" can be heard in human form.
A Cry From The Inside is one of Hammons’ earliest body prints, a technique he developed throughout his career. He makes the prints by smearing grease on his skin, hair and clothing before pressing against a large sheet of paper, which he then covers with coloured pigments.
A Cry From The Inside, a landmark experiment by Hammons, is in the Pinault Collection and was first exhibited during the "Sequence 1" show at the Palazzo Grassi in 2007.
