Google : Egypt

2006-2007

Cibachrome and mat

26 x 32.1 cm (10 1/4 x 12 5/8 in.)

An encyclopedic image featuring Egyptian monuments is framed and placed on the ground, standing on foam rubber squares. Other unused protections are abandoned a little further on: perhaps they served to protect the work that can only be guessed at, hung on the wall and only highlighted by a shadow? A plastic sheet coming out of the field recalls the hanging context that characterises this work.

Taken during the installation of an exhibition, Google: Egypt belongs to a series of Cibachrome pictures Louise Lawler made between 1993 and 2010. The series is part of her investigation into the relationship between works of art and exhibition spaces since the late 1970s.

Google photography: Louise Lawler's Egypt is in the Pinault Collection. It was first exhibited as part of the "Sequence 1" show in 2007 at the Palazzo Grassi.
