Adolf (Must be installed 8 inches from the floor)

2006

Cibachrome mounted on aluminium museum box

73 x 57.5 cm

Adolf, (Must be installed 8 inches from the floor) shows a miniature Hitler, kneeling and praying, nested in a box. This position of prayer, combined with the confinement of the sculpture, can evoke a situation of confession in a visiting room, but the photograph actually recontextualises a work by Maurizio Cattelan.

A controversial wax sculpture, Him was photographed in its shipping crate by Louise Lawler for her installation at the "Where Are We Going?" show at the Palazzo Grassi in 2006. Recording what goes on behind the scenes in the creation of several works, including by Damien Hirst and Rudolf Stingel, Lawler reflects on the relationship between the exhibition context and the work’s meaning.

A self-reflexive prologue on the stakes of artistic events, Adolf (Must be installed 8 inches from the floor) by Louise Lawler is in the Pinault Collection. It was first exhibited at the "Sequence 1" show at the Palazzo Grassi in 2007.
