A black and white video opens with a still image from a high school yearbook: two young men are standing, acting in a school play. Based on this picture, Mike Kelley directed Domestic Scene, a short drama about a tumultuous love affair between two men.

Focusing on issues of identity, self-denial and the suffering that flows from it, the video is part of a larger work entitled Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction. Kelly’s aim is to make a video for each day of the year based on a photograph from a quite ordinary source, such as a school yearbook or local newspaper.

An inward-looking work about the role of the "norm" as a source of psychological trauma, Kelley's Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction #1 (Domestic Scene) is in the Pinault Collection. It was first exhibited at the "Sequence 1" show at the Palazzo Grassi in 2007.
