Francesco
Lo Savio

Italian, 1935 — 1963

Similarly to Pietro Manzoni, Francesco Lo Savio conducted his pioneering aesthetic research over a short period of time between the late 1950s and early 1960s. Trained as an architect and influenced by Piet Mondrian and the Bauhaus, this Italian artist created a unique oeuvre centered on light, form and space.

Lo Savio defines his monochrome works as “visions of light spectrums in space.” The canvases thus aim at “making empty space visible.” His active years are marked by three painting cycles. The Spazio-Luce (Light-Space) series focuses on the energy of pure forms such as the circle and the square; the Filtri (Filters) superimpose pure forms, which become “bodies of light”; the Metalli (Metals) are made with industrial materials and techniques.

The Francesco Lo Savio artworks held in the Pinault Collection were first presented in 2006 at the Where Are We Going? exhibition at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice.
