Paul
Pfeiffer

American, born in 1966

A skilled user of sound and image technology, Paul Pfeiffer is mainly known for his video art. The American artist seeks to destabilise our perceptions and visual expectations. For example, he erases the central athlete in an archive of sports events. He regularly uses repetition, creating worlds where the characters perform the same actions over and over again.

Pfeiffer plays on our collective imagination and cult images from mainstream culture, recreating for example the famous shower scene in Hitchcock's Psycho with surveillance cameras. He seeks to dissect the mass media’s role in shaping our consciousness in a culture obsessed with celebrity. The same themes can be found in his sculpture.

Pfeiffer's video installations in the Pinault Collection were presented for the first time during the 2008 “Passage du temps” (“Passage of time”) show at the Tri Postal in Lille.
