Through misappropriation and a keen sense of staging, Tom Friedman explores the poetic and comic potential of everyday objects. Collages, assemblages and montages are all ways to express his fantastical universe where childish jokes, depth of concept and real know-how are linked.
After the end of the 1980s, the American artist developed a unique approach to materials. The making of whimsical objects - from the paper ogre to the polystyrene tower, to the soap with a spiral of pubic hair - shows great sophistication in the grotesque. “For me, art is at its peak when the artistic object helps us to navigate this complex fog, like a beacon. What I find so interesting in the artistic context, and what doesn’t exist in any other field of research, is that it includes everything”, he explains.
Tom Friedman’s work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2009 exhibition "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi.
