Overseer
2008
Aluminium foil, paint, pubic hair, underarm hair and head hair
337.8 x 147.3 x 99.1 cm (133 x 58 x 39 in.)
A slender figure stands several metres tall, nude except for untied shoes and socks, one of which is rolled down. The higher the deformed body with fragile, filiform limbs stretches up from its base, the thinner it becomes.
Friedman always uses everyday objects or ordinary, organic materials in his sculptures, such as the real pubic hair and hair on Overseer. Distorting the human figure takes a humorous turn here, giving the monster a likeable aspect.
The Overseer was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection in 2009 at the major group show "Mapping the studio" at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
