Lohaus
German, 1940 — 2010
Bernd Lohaus works mainly with wood, stone and paper, which he strips of all redundant elements: the material is revealed in simple works that express a rigorous formal language. Fascinated by the meaning and rhythm of words, Lohaus also works with language as a whole material by writing or engraving letters on wooden sculptures.
Initially trained in classic sculpture, Lohaus later trained under Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie. Since 1965, he has welcomed international avant-garde in his Wide White Space gallery, while continuing to work on his own projects. While the formal simplicity of his sculptures can hint at American Minimalism, Lohaus still moves away from it with his preference for the history of materials.
The work of Bernd Lohaus has been the subject of many retrospectives, including those at the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art (2015) and at the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais (2014). It was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
