Wood, rope, iron

120 x 41.5 x 25 cm (47 1/4 x 16 5/16 x 9 13/16 in.)

A bundle of wood is tied with rope and hung from an iron hook. This untitled installation is nothing but balance, the interaction of each element allowing its own existence: a simple running knot collects the pieces of wood, causing the rope to tighten under their weight; if the hook that holds the bundle is of a ridiculous size compared with the elements that hang from it, the good hold of the installation still depends on its inflexibility.

Throughout his life, Bernd Lohaus has been exploring simple materials through essential associations focused on the combination of elements and their history. His interest in the intrinsic qualities of materials is perfectly expressed in this installation, which creates a relational system between flexible rope, heavy wood and stiff iron.

The sculpture Untitled (1969) by Bernd Lohaus is part of the Pinault Collection. It was first shown at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
