Belgian, born in 1969

David Claerbout enjoys close analysis of the relationship between the viewer and fixed or animated images, when these images are used to seize a unique moment or to represent the passage of time.

Born in 1969 in Kortrijk, Belgium, David Claerbout now lives and works in Antwerp. Initially trained in painting at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, he has since moved into photography, video and digital arts. Using modern image manipulation techniques, Claerbout creates hybrid forms, mid-way between film and photography, which question the viewer’s perception and erase the dividing line between reality and fiction, between spontaneity and cleverly thought-out construction.

The artist’s work was first presented by the Pinault Collection in 2011 at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi.
