Like John Steinbeck in literature, photographer Dorothea Lange contributed to establishing a certain vision of the Great Depression in the United States’ collective memory. Driven from the outset by social and political activism, she was a pioneering American photojournalist.

The young photographer developed the acuity and relevance of her photographic eye within the photography program of the Farm Security Administration (FSA), set up as part of the New Deal to document the crisis in rural areas. Her emotionally powerful portraits of farmers abandoned to their fate reflect both her aesthetic skills and her humanistic convictions.

Lange's work, a priceless legacy for photography, is represented in the Pinault Collection, which will show the iconic print Migrant Mother, at the “Au-delà de la couleur” (“Beyond Colour”) exhibition at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes in June 2021.
