American, 1933 — 2008

A singular artist linked to the San Francisco Beat Generation, Bruce Conner works by playfully and critically re-using mass media images. He uses collages, assemblages and photographs, alongside video recordings and found objects.

Bruce Conner's cinematographic oeuvre spans from the 1950s to the 2000s. The juxtaposition of very short shots alters the original meaning of the found sequences and enables him to question the discourse conveyed through the images. This practice of found footage, which anticipates video clips, is part of an iconoclastic and unclassifiable plastic oeuvre.

Bruce Conner's work was first shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Illusion of Light at Palazzo Grassi, in 2014.
