Jos De Gruyter & Harald Thys
Jos De Gruyter & Harald Thys
Belgian, born in 1965 & 1966
Belgian artists Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys are best known for their visual productions, but they have expanded their work to include photography, sculpture and drawing. Despite their simple, slipshod appearance, their protean creations take a critical, unvarnished look at reality, imbuing them with an almost macabre tragic quality.
Working together since the late 1980s, De Gruyter and Thys combine comedy and tragedy in a world where the protagonists are often imaginary characters played by toys, puppets and sometimes non-professional actors. In a way, their sarcasm resembles work by their Surrealist countryman René Magritte.
De Gruyter and Thys’s work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collectio at the 2015 "Slip of the Tongue" exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
