Indeterminacy, incompleteness, and illegibility are among the concepts that Haitian artist Andy Robert explores to the point of sublimating them. His practice, initially focused on painting though he has recently ventured into sculpture, often brings together ambiguous images and the precision of the marks that are on the verge of giving them form. The lengthy process of composition and the impulse of discovery are also brought into dialogue, demonstrating above all great artistic freedom. Andy Robert has developed a practice that also incorporates his roots: the Caribbean philosophy he has inherited, that of Édouard Glissant in particular, also seeks to inscribe difference within the movement of the world. Andy Robert also appears to have drawn important lessons from African American art, which he later encountered, particularly regarding the political significance of the found object. Resisting straightforward interpretation without distancing himself from history and touching on narrative without ever becoming confined by it, he explores the space between a figurative depiction of reality grappling with its most pressing issues and its abstract representation, more faithful to its immateriality.
