An elegant woman wearing a red dress and a golden shawl is solemnly sat in a somber landscape. A sadly eerie tree, standing bare on a hill, unfurls in her back: a surprising alignment is created between this tormented landscape and the mysterious character of the woman, reminiscent of mystical images.
For the past three decades, Cindy Sherman has been using herself as model, wearing all kinds of costumes in her photographs that explore the complexities of identity. In the 2010-2011 series, which includes Untitled, 2016, she appears in a series of landscapes that were photographed on the islands of Capri and Stromboli, as well as in Shelter Island and Iceland. Through digital manipulation, she dramatizes these backdrops as well as her own appearance and explores an endless range of psychological profiles.
Cindy Sherman's photograph Untitled, 2016 was first presented by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition Dancing With Myself at the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2016).
