A woman wearing make-up and a charmingly outdated dress poses with a cigarette for what looks like a conventional photographic portrait in front of a lakeside landscape. A ghostly double merges into a dark, stormy sky, giving her a strange, disturbing air.

The model is Cindy Sherman, depicted as usual in a deliberately stereotypical female role. The photograph belongs to a 2016 series featuring portraits of aging women dressed like 1920s flappers, who defied conventions with their appearance and behaviour. The spirit of the staging directly refers to the aesthetics of 1920s movies, which made the unruly flapper figure popular.

Untitled, 2016 was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Dancing with Myself" show at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
