The models in this shot look so much alike it may be a family portrait, two generations standing side by side. Three girls with identical outfits and neat hairstyles flank an older, vibrant-looking woman whose uprightness and strict appearance betray a certain rigour. The kaleidoscopic background breaks with the portrait’s illusory authenticity.
Cindy Sherman impersonates four different characters in Untitled, 2016. It belongs to a 2016 series of large-format photographs of flappers, observing the codes of conventional photographic portraits.
Untitled, 2016 was first exhibited by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 "Dancing with Myself" show at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
