As a giant figure seemingly taken by surprise as she strolls by the sea, Cindy Sherman, dressed in a dark gown adorned with golden motifs, interrupts her walk on the water to face the camera. Illuminated with a bright artificial light, which signals the picture was taken in a studio, she stands out against a rocky landscape dotted with sharp asperities.

In this series made in 2010-2011, which includes Untitled #543, the American artist stages herself in front of natural and desolate landscapes photographed in Italy, Iceland and New York. Her different incarnations, always wearing sophisticated costumes, contrast with the inhospitable landscapes in which they are set, thus creating a specific dynamic in each of the ‘tableaux’.
