The photographs in the Untitled Film Stills series are initially surprising because of a form of déjà vu which they instantly provoke. The title of the series immediately refers to cinema: one recognizes in each of these photographs a character, a setting, or a scene from a film. Cindy Sherman, the author and the model of these photographs, focused on producing images constructed from the codes of representation of women in cinema, fashion, and advertising.

Begun in 1977 and continued for three years, this series of small black-and-white pictures is one of Cindy Sherman's first recognized works. Throughout her career she has continued to explore the structures of representation by making visible the devices at play in the construction of an image. By exposing its own artifices, her work leads us to question every image and representation itself.

From this series of seventy photographs, eleven pieces are presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition "Ouverture" at the Bourse de Commerce in 2021.
