Initiated in 1992, the Sex Pictures series is one of Cindy Sherman's most controversial projects. Her photographs address the topic of pornography through a grotesque and even absurd vocabulary.

In Sex Pictures, dismembered sex shop dolls are assembled with medical prostheses in a deliberately obscene way. With her raw, albeit fabricated images, Cindy Sherman questions head on the tropes about female sexual representations. Such hybridization is reminiscent of Hans Bellmer's surrealist drawings and Pierre Molinier's erotic self-portraits.
Held in the Pinault Collection, the Sex Pictures series was shown for the first time in 2006 at the Where Are We Going? exhibition at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice.
