There is a feeling of theatrical drama in Untitled #564. Standing in an arcade under a series of horseshoe arches, the elegantly tragic figure of a woman wearing a purple dress reminiscent of a robe from Antiquity seems to be speaking, or singing. A bright light illuminates her hair and her dress, highlighting its folds in a carefully crafted chiaroscuro.
Cindy Sherman's photographs reveal the fictions of individuality and the impossibility of representing a fundamental, or ‘essential’ identity. As implied by the ageing hand crisscrossed by bulging veins that stands out against the purple fabric, the 2010-2011 series focuses on the ageing of the body and resonates with the artist's personal questionings.
Cindy Sherman's photograph Untitled, 2016 was first presented by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition Dancing With Myself at the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2016).
