Marden
American, born in 1938
By his artistic approach and his paintings, Brice Marden has strongly contibuted to defining minimalist painting. His sober and disconcerting works emphasize a refined sense of colour and nuance. Celebrating the joy of painting, its materiality and emotion it conveys, his works stand out of the formalists experiences of his contemporaries.
Since 1963, the American artist began to realize monochrome canvases or juxtaposed rectangular panels of differents colours. He used a singular combination of paint, encaustic and beeswax, giving the surface a glossy appearance. The line, influenced by the art of calligraphy, appears in Brice Marden’s work in the 1980’s, giving rise to organic and expressive paintings.
Brice Mardent’s work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2006 « Where Are We Going ? » exhibition at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice.
