Vintage Violence

2004-2005

Plaster, resin paint, harware, nylon - 1700 rain drops

Variable dimensions

A rain shower of 1,700 bright red plastic drops falls obliquely. This immobile deluge titled Vintage Violence after a John Cale album was conceived for the Where Are We Going? exhibition at Palazzo Grassi. It thus merges with the palace, originating in the clouds of the ceiling frescoes and following the central staircase downwards.

Urs Fischer's Vintage Violence combines several characteristics of his oeuvre. It shows craftsmanship and a performative dimension: when using the staircase of the Palazzo Grassi, visitors had to swerve among the drops that were hanging by invisible nylon threads. With humor and theatrical drama, the installation invited viewers to become aware of the space that surrounds them.

Held in the Pinault Collection, Vintage Violence is one of Urs Fischer's most spectacular artworks.
