Bad Timing, Lamb Chop!
2004-2005
Cast aluminium, polyurethane enamel
450 x 330 x 230 cm (177 3/16 x 129 15/16 x 90 9/16 in.)
Urs Fischer's Bad Timing, Lamb Chop! is based on the zany combination of a half-empty cigarette packet and a chair, as if hugging each other, in outsized proportions.
The arbitrary juxtaposition of two ordinary objects explores the limits of mimesis in our modern systems of representation. In these sculptures, Fischer is driven not by a concept but by the desire to create a physical form. He does not aim to suggest a narrative or make a socio-political critique. He is satisfied with wanting to raise the viewer's awareness of his environment by monumentalising familiar objects.
Acquired by the Pinault Collection, Bad Timing, Lamb Chop! has been on the Grand Canal in Venice since it was set up for the 2009 group show "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana.
