Throughout his forty-year career, Rudolf Stingel has continually experimented with painting, both as a medium and as a subject. He consciously positions it as a metaphor to probe perceptions of the image and the conventional limits of what constitutes art.

Throughout his career, photorealism has remained an integral part of his pictorial work, combining his intrinsically process-based approach with his conceptual rigor. Stingel employs a scrupulous and demanding method to meticulously recreate an image, generating a self-reflective image of an image.

Through this objective process, Stingel establishes authorial distance, destabilizing presupposed expectations of authenticity and facsimile, context and origin. In doing so, he subversively invokes a renewed encounter with the image. His latest works (Untitled, 2022) install his own past work within his studio.
