A & P Store Window, Circa 1930 focuses on the modest front of a New York grocery store. The repetitive patterns of certain items, advertising signs and reflections in the window visually saturate the composition.
Berenice Abbott was deeply marked by Eugène Atget’s singular photographic work, which she saw during a long stay in Paris. After returning to New York, in 1930 she began working on a major project with similar ambitions, eventually called "Changing New York". Aiming to draw a comprehensive portrait of the burgeoning American metropolis, she shot streets, façades and shop windows.
A & P Store Window, Circa 1930 was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana in Venice in 2019.
