Two huge American flags are in the composition of Murray Hill Hotel, 112 Park Avenue, Manhattan 1935, illustrating the eponymous skyscraper’s façade in the heart of Manhattan. Bathed in light at its centre, its volumes’ monumentality is underscored by tiny passers-by.
Berenice Abbott spent five years, from 1935 to 1939, on a gigantic photographic portrait of the American metropolis then undergoing urban metamorphosis, entitled "Changing New York". This picture is part of that massive project. Her subject, the Murray Hill Hotel, is captured at a time when new dazzling skyscrapers were transforming the face of the city Focusing here on its façade, the photographer equally highlighted verticality as in other famous shots from the same series.
