Gramercy Park West #3-4, Manhattan, November 27, 1935

1935

Silver print

20.2 x 25.3 cm (7 15/16 x 9 15/16 in.)

Only the slim, ghostly silhouette of a man wearing a top hat at the bottom of the composition breaks the loneliness of this shot of an ornate façade in 1930s Manhattan.

The photographer, Berenice Abbott, spent five years between 1935 and 1939 working on "Changing New York", a massive project devoted to the American metropolis. To achieve her goal of capturing the burgeoning city’s old and new façades, she aimed to take photographs that are both artistic and documentary.

Gramercy Park West 3-4, Manhattan, November 27, 1935 was exhibited for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2019 show "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
