104 Willow Street, Brooklyn, NY, 1936

1936

Silver print

24 x 19.3 cm (9 7/16 x 7 5/8 in.)

The dark, ornamental, interlacing metal fence vertically structuring the foreground of Willow Street, Brooklyn, NY, 1936 contrasts with the plain white façade in the background.

This picture attests to the constant care with which Abbott framed and composed her shots for the "Changing New York" project she worked on from 1935 to 1939. Wishing to draw an objective portrait of the American metropolis in full metamorphosis, she photographed countless façades to creatively reveal their uniqueness.

Willow Street, Brooklyn, NY, 1936 was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the "Luogo e Segni" ("Place and Signs") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana in Venice in 2019.
